MIMEH
Innovative management models for Museums and the Cultural Heritage in Europe

Proceedings

MIMEH is a pilot project promoted by Artlab in 1998 and funded by the "Raffaello" programme (European Commission DGX), Regione Piemonte and the Compagnia di San Paolo. Initially the project took the form of a European study and a seminar at which the results were presented and discussed.

As part of the MIMEH project 20 cases of innovative cultural management were identified and analysed in Italy, Germany, Austria, Holland, United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, Switzerland and Bosnia. These focused on the following topics:

  • interaction, co-operation, partnership
  • institutional engineering
  • public attendance policies
  • staff policies

The directors of the institutions taking part in the study discussed the results of the study with other researchers and academics at an international seminar held in Turin from 4-6 November at the State Archive and in Rivoli Castle.

During the final session the heads of department for university courses on arts management from Austria, Italy, Russia and USA discussed the implications of the new management models for training programmes.

Both the study and the proceedings of the seminar will be available as a printed volume and on disk in Italian, English and German.

The project was carried out by ARTLAB and ICCM (International Centre for Culture & Management), Austria.

With the participation of:
ICUSEM (Institute of Cultural Studies of Europe and the Mediterranean), Greece ICC (International Cultural Centre), Poland
ERICArts (European Research Institute for Comparative Cultural Policy and the Arts)
ENCATC (European Network of Cultural Administration Training Centres).

The results and consensus of opinion resulting from the MIMEH project have prompted the participants to set up a permanent working group on management innovation in museums and arts administration co-ordinated by the Fitzcarraldo Foundation and ICCM in Salzburg.
