SERRALUNGA
Set in the Region of Langhe and Roero.
The central part of the village, situated on the ridge of a hill, is the oldest one. It developed in the late Middle Ages and it's a typical example of a village grown around a fortified structure, which guaranteed its protection.
Since the beginning of XII century it changed the lords several
times (the lord of Manzano, Bonifacio del Vasto, the family Del
Carretto). In 1190 it was ceded to the marquises of Saluzzo and in
1212 to the noble family of Falletti di Barolo.
At the beginning of XVII the main characteristic of the village is
one of the most impressing and evocative medieval fortified
buildings that exist today in Piedmont. A few meters away from the
castle there is an interesting ancient noble chapel flanked by a
Romanesque bell-tower with pyramidal cusp. The construction of this
magnificent castle with dizzy, bare and exalting vertical lines,
lasted ten years, between 1340 and 1350.
It was built by Pietrino Falletti for defence purposes. These
features have been maintained through the centuries till our days.
The extraordinary, evocative and spectacular elongated style of its
architecture is due to the fact that the edifice consists of a
slender cilindrical tower, of a quadrilateral and a hanging tower,
which are built on various levels, but are all leaning towards the
central body which basically develops upwards. The main function of
the emphasized vertical structure of the castle was obviously the
one of sighting - it still offers a breath-taking view over the
hills of Langa, but it was also supposed to discourage the possible
attacks, since in the past it was surrounded by a wide moat. The
monument is property of the State and it was restored in 1950,
hence it completely regained its magnificent structure.
The cuisine of Langhe and Roero, the doorway to a world-famous oenogastronomic basin thirty thousand covers in a territory with less than 200.000 inhabitants. And still, the cuisine of Langhe is not the one of big numbers. The restoration miracle of Langhe and Roero has remote origins. It is the result of a culinary "melting pot" which brought together the noble cuisine, with its tradition of Savoy family whose chefs were sent to Paris in order to learn the art of savours; the middle-class cuisine, influenced by the barter products from the near-by Ligurian Coast where led the "salt-road"; the poor cuisine, with its genuine flavours, based on the belief that any potential ingredient is a resource which can be exploited. The result of this centuries-long procedure of cultural and culinary elaboration is a cuisine of simple, but delicate hues, where the true protagonists are the high-quality ingredients, fruits of the generous lands of Langhe and Roero. Famous are the cheese, the wines, the hazel-nuts and the white truffles.
