Abstract

The study was commissioned by IETM (International Network for Contemporary Performing Arts with over 450 organisations in 40 countries), conducted by the Fondazione Fitzcarraldo, and published by the Arts Council of Finland. The first attempt to map the phenomenon of cultural networking in Europe, the study describes networking practices both quantitatively and qualitatively, and provides insights into some of the unique characteristics of IETM. Published in 2001, it is also available in print format at the IETM Secretariat.

Our role

The research on the Effects of Networking is the first study on the processes and effects of cultural networking conducted at a European level during 1998-1999. To carry out this research, the Fitzcarraldo Foundation made use of a number of tools:

  • A questionnaire sent to members to collect quantitative data on IETM organisations.
  • 32 face-to-face interviews with network members, selected on the basis of sectoral diversity, activities, background, and residence, providing valuable qualitative data on individual experiences within IETM.
  • Telephone interviews with members who had left the network to investigate motivation and trajectories within the network.
  • Participation in working groups, meetings, and informal encounters during the Cardiff (October 1998), Helsinki (April 1999), and Barcelona (October 1999) meetings.

The research analysed entrepreneurial behaviours, cultural attitudes, value systems, and the research of network members, identifying prevalent patterns and orientations in network usage, as well as the conditions for its functioning.

The analysis examined:

  1. Individual interactions, trajectories, and personal stories;
  2. The effects of networking: tangible and intangible outcomes, expectations, changes caused by networking on individual members and their affiliated organisations;
  3. The effects of interactions on the structuring of the network: size, organisation, and network economies.
